Central-Vancouver Island: Best Local Beaches

June 5, 2016

Summer has rolled around again and with it comes spending time at the beach! The Nanaimo area has plenty of amazing beaches just waiting to be discovered. Here are some of our favourite local beaches and a summer beach checklist to keep handy when packing your beach bag.

Departure Bay Beach

Located in Central Nanaimo and just a 10-minute drive from Linley Valley this beach is treasured for being a great spot to relax in the centre of the city!

Sebastian Beach

Located in lower Lantzville and also a 10-minute drive away, this beach has been a local secret for years and has now also become a hot destination for kite surfers as well! Known for it’s white sandy beaches and breathtaking views, it is truly a local gem and worth checking out.

Neck Point

Not exactly your typical sandy beach, Neck Point boasts many smaller beaches with pebbles rather than sand and is a 9-minute drive from Linley Valley. However, don’t let this keep you from going! If you are looking for a less populated beach this is probably your best bet. The views are stunning and with a little imagination you could be in a tropical paradise.

Piper’s Lagoon

Not too far from Neck Point is one of Nanaimo’s most treasured parks: Piper’s Lagoon. A stretch of sandy lagoons is accompanied by water on either side and makes for a truly beautiful landscape. If you are looking to get some exercise while at the beach, Piper’s Lagoon is perfect because it also serves as a park with many trails.
