Spring Gardening Tips: Beginner’s Edition
May is right around the corner and that means you need to get your garden started! Watching and nurturing plants is such a rewarding experience and everyone should give it a try no matter how green your thumb is. Here are some of our best gardening tips so you can all have a beautiful and colorful garden to enjoy this summer.
Start with Easy-to-Grow Veggies
Starting a vegetable garden for the first time? No worries. There are many vegetables that are fairly easy to grow and taste so much better when grown at home. Herbs such as chives, basil and cilantro are low maintenance, but provide the perfect boost of flavor to your favorite dish. Other vegetables that are great for beginners include lettuce and tomatoes. If you’re hesitant to start from seed, just head to your local nursery and pick up some starter plants.
Add a Pop of Color with Flowers
Now, if you are more interested in the aesthetics of your garden and want to spruce it up with some color, flowers are the best way to go. Some flowers that do not require a lot of maintenance include sunflowers, sweet peas, marigolds and geraniums. If you want a nice variety head to your home and garden store and pick up a wildflower mix of seeds. All of the different colors and textures beautifully compliment each other and provide the boost of color and liveliness your garden needs.
Involve Your Little Ones
Want to get your little one involved in the garden? Even though gardening might not be every child’s favorite activity, there are still many ways to get them involved. For a fun craft idea try painting stepping-stones, constructing a fairy garden or making a bird feeder. For more ideas check out this Parent Map Article.
Gardening Not your Thing? Order a Local Veggie Box!
If you are reluctant to start your own garden but would still like to enjoy fresh and local vegetables, consider ordering a local vegetable box. The boxes contain a variety of in-season vegetables, locally grown and delivered to your doorstep.
Some companies that provide this service on Vancouver Island include Thrive on the Island, Heart and Soil Organics and Nanaimo Food Share.
